{"id":100,"date":"2011-09-12T15:02:23","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T19:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bluedinosaurs.com\/code\/blog\/wordpress\/?p=100"},"modified":"2012-10-05T14:47:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-05T18:47:27","slug":"intro-to-gigasun-jet-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dinomage.com\/wp\/2011\/09\/intro-to-gigasun-jet-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Intro to GigaSun Jet design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have played a lot of shoot &#8217;em ups. \u00a0I&#8217;ve played old arcade shooters: Space Invaders, Galaga, Asteroids, Time Pilot, Sky Kid. \u00a0I grew up with console and PC shmups: Life Force, Ikari Warriors, 1943, Captain Skyhawk, AD&amp;D DragonStrike, Tiger Heli, Raptor, Star Soldier R, Bangai-O. \u00a0I&#8217;ve played newer ones: Ikaruga, Desperate Space, Geometry Wars. \u00a0And of course I&#8217;ve played some Flash shoot &#8217;em ups. \u00a0The thing is, it&#8217;s hard to find a deep shoot &#8217;em up: one that keeps me interested after I figure out the controls and enemy patterns.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s obvious that depth is not what shooters were originally made for. \u00a0They are known for their action-oriented gameplay. \u00a0Shmups which have lots of action, colorful graphics, and took a while to beat have tended to get rave reviews. \u00a0Shoot &#8217;em ups have always been great in the arcades because the challenge matched well with the economy of coin-ops. \u00a0When moved into the home, however, such a simple game with unlimited plays wears out quickly. \u00a0As a natural progression, shooters have incorporated some elements from other game genres. \u00a0The problem? \u00a0More often than not, these games fail to differentiate.<\/p>\n<div

class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geometry Wars - This is how far we&#39;ve gotten in 25 years \ud83d\ude09 (image from www.armchairempire.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How often I have played a shooter where you can collect about three upgrades to your main weapon, a missile side-weapon, and smart bombs. \u00a0Some games offer an astounding selection of four ships (sarcasm)!<\/p>\n<p>GigaSun Jet is my attempt to create a game that I will love. \u00a0As usual, if I succeed in that and nobody else likes it, I&#8217;ll still be happy. \u00a0Thankfully, my tastes have a lot in common with other people. \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0GigaSun Jet does not focus on trade and travel, but rather on the action that shooters do so well and the customization that I love. \u00a0To those ends, I had a lot to consider in order to get the depth the game needs.<\/p>\n<p>The game isn&#8217;t finished yet, but it is far enough along that I could throw together some missions and lame dialog and call it a day (though it&#8217;d be missing a lot of content and polish). \u00a0So, it feels like a good time to start talking\u00a0seriously\u00a0about the decisions that went into the game.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first in a series of posts I&#8217;ll be writing about the design of GigaSun Jet. \u00a0A lot of experimentation was done while working on GigaSun Jet. \u00a0No waterfall design here. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t made a ton of games, so each time I make one, it is full of learning experiences and new areas to explore. \u00a0If there was something I&#8217;ve never seen done before or another way of looking at the idea, I tried it out. \u00a0This series will explore the challenges that were (and are) faced, the unique ideas that were used (or not used), and how they come together to affect the gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>When brainstorming for GigaSun Jet, I was heavily influenced by both my fond and painful experiences with several games. \u00a0They led me to some essential questions which needed to be answered. \u00a0The posts to come will discuss my answers to them. \u00a0I probably don&#8217;t have all the answers, but I do have some good ones. \u00a0Do you?<\/p>\n<p>In the coming posts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you actually have fun in a shooter when you&#8217;re not shooting anything?<\/li>\n<li>How can a parts system be exciting?<\/li>\n<li>Can the wasting of content be avoided and the parts system still be fun? \u00a0(Why not save up money to buy the best parts instead of all the ones in between?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&lt;<a
